The Washington State Developmental Disabilities Council is proud to share a new report we commissioned with the University of Washington Institute on Human Development and Disability on how people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are impacted by the criminal justice system in Washington State and nationally.
The report reviews laws, research, and expert interviews to identify where the system is falling short and how it can improve. Key recommendations include better training for police and courts, stronger reentry supports, and more community-based alternatives to incarceration.
This report is a starting point for advocacy and systems change to ensure fair treatment and support for people with IDD.
