2026 Legislative Breakfast Brings Community and Lawmakers Together

Participants at the third annual CAC Legislative Breakfast

Early on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 42 advocates, self-advocates and family members braved the morning traffic for the third annual Community Advocacy Coalition (CAC) Legislative Breakfast, sponsored by the Washington State Developmental Disabilities Council (DDC).

Six legislators joined us and were recognized for their support of developmental disability issues. Each received an official pin featuring the CAC logo.

Lawmakers listened as community members shared their priorities for the coming year. They also offered their perspectives on what to expect in the upcoming legislative session.

Priorities raised by the community included:

  • Housing: Addressing the needs of the 37,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who are housing insecure
  • Workforce: Sustaining and growing the direct support workforce
  • Education: Protecting the right to inclusive education
  • Employment and community inclusion: Expanding opportunities to work and take part in community life
  • Family support: Strengthening support for families
  • Civil rights: Protecting civil rights, especially the right to live in the community
  • Services and the budget: Preserving essential services despite the state budget shortfall

Thank you to everyone who came out, and to the legislators who took the time to listen. Conversations like these help build the relationships that carry our advocacy through session.
